Critical and reader response to the diversity in young adult literature

This bachelor's thesis deals with the critical and reader response to sexual and racial diversity in young adult (YA) literature. First of all, It tries to define the terms YA literature, diversity and review. It describes the specifics of this literary category and its readers, together with a description of the dystopia and fantasy genres. It also focuses on the diverse representation of race and sexuality in adolescent literature. Subsequently, it analyzes the diversity of the books Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Six Crows by Leigh Bardugh, including their Czech and foreign media coverage. The publications are first described in terms of plot, then the characters and their environment are examined from the point of diversity, and finally reader and critical comments on the topic of representation of selected diversities are taken into account. In this thesis the Czech media scene is represented by the readers website databazeknih.cz, the literary magazines Pevnost and XB-1, as well as the website iDNES.cz. The reader website Goodreads and the literary sections of The New York Times, Publishers Weekly and KIRKUS magazines represent the foreign reviews. The aim of this Master Thesis is to provide the reader with an annotated literary translation of the book Palabras Envenenadas written by the Spanish author Maite Carranza. The first part of the thesis presents in total of 6 translated chapters of the novella Palabras Envenenadas. The second part focuses on presenting the information about the author and the style of the book as well as the role of the original and the translatated text in the source and target culture context, the development of the translation analysis and translation methods while discussing the translation problems and their solutions. Identity Development in Akata Witch and Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor

This thesis explores the development of individuality in Nigerian books for young adults, Akata Witch and Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. For that, the literary concepts of young adult literature and the heroic journey (monomyth) is used. This thesis aims to prove that the heroic journey framework may be applied to young adult literature, primarily concerning the formation of identity resulting a certain correlation between the two types of narrative. Based on the description of concepts of literary theory, such as the Other, described by Robyn McCallum, and the individual constitutive elements of the heroic journey, in the theoretical part, the analysis from both vantage points and subsequent correlation between them is described in the practical part. The two books that are analysed are described from the point of three major concepts of young adult literature and all twenty six steps of the heroic journey, based on Campbell and other literary theorists. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that there is a certain correlation between the two narrative frameworks. It is especially similar concerning the growth of individuality of its protagonists. War theme in young adult literature and critical response of selected novels

The subject of this thesis is the analysis of critical response to three selected novels featuring war theme as well as being written as literature for Young Adults. The first part of the thesis is devoted to Young Adult literature in general, its evolution and trends. This part also explains literary criticism as a term, explores its history, and briefly describes the character of analyzed media. The main part of the thesis is dedicated to the novels titled Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, Anna and the Swallow Man by Gavriel Savit and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and the critical response to the books both in Czech and foreign press.

Three significant trends in young adult literature

The aim of this diploma thesis called Three significant trends in young adult literature is to analyse this literary category in the Czech Republic; to describe the publishing houses focusing on this type of literature and to determine, if there are any trends - and if so to describe them. The first chapter states different definitions of so called YA literature and its understanding abroad and in the Czech Republic among the publishers. In the next chapter I characterise the main trends in YA literature that already exist and also those that could emerge, according to literary agents and publishers. In the next part of this thesis I describe three chosen genres: urban fantasy, fairy tale retellings and dystopian novels and I analyse four series determined as typical for respective genres: The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Divergent by Veronica Roth. Each analysis is followed by the description of media response to the chosen series. Edition of literature for young adult in the Czech publishing houses

This diploma thesis deals with the current position of young adult literature it the Czech book market. Young adult literature is primarily intended for teenage readers and captures topics that are close to this age group. The aim of the thesis is to find out, how is this kind of literature published in Czech media system. This text also acquaint closer with the term the young adult literature. For this reason, the first part of the work deals with the definition of young adult literature and the presentation of common genres, as well as the brief history and its influence on adolescents. Through interviews with the representatives from the three selected publishers that publish the young adult titles, we have found out which place this literary sector occupies in the Czech book market. The main achievement we have learned is the fact that although the young adult is a relatively new term for the Czech environment, even in the few years that we have encountered, it has become a relatively well-established concept. Young people choose titles with lighter motives, but books that solve more demanding themes are often searched by readers in the long term for several years after their release. Paranormal romance: an attempt to define the subgenre in the context of young adult literature

This diploma thesis thematically follows up one of subgenres of young adult popular literature - paranormal romance. Its main aim is to create a comprehensive definition of this subgenre on the basis of interpretation of representative sagas - Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn), Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (Hush, Hush, Crescendo, Silence, Finale), Nightshade by Andrea R. Cremer (Nightshade, Wolfsbane, Bloodrose, Snakeroot), Wings by Aprilynne Pike (Wings, Spells, Illusions, Destined) and Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake (Anna Dressed in Blood, Girl of Nightmares). The thesis was divided into eight chapters. In the first chapter we have outlined the historical development of paranormal romance, in the second part we focused on its genre characteristic. In the third and fourth chapters we tried to create a prototype of heroine and hero of this subgenre. The fifth part is about the steady plot schemes in paranormal romances.
